About SCI
SCI was founded by Pierre Cérésole, a Swiss engineer who established a peace and humanitarian movement in the aftermath of World War I and laid down the foundations of SCI in 1920.

SCI INDIA
SCI first came to India at the request of Dr. Rajendra Prasad a social worker who later became the First President of the Republic of India. In 1934 when a team of European volunteers along with Pierre Ceresole undertook reconstruction work after the earthquake in Bihar.
In 1950, another International Team worked with Indian volunteers, for the resettlement of displaced persons in Faridabad, near Delhi, immediately after the partition of India and Pakistan.
Since that time, SCI India organizes many voluntary work camps and other actions every year, with state branches/groups in seminars to get people involved, trained, motivated and orientated in social action and voluntary work. It takes a lead in activities and issues related to forestry, environment, refugees, peace, communal harmony, disabled and women’s issues.
SCI India has 5 State Groups in India, which are focusing on the issues of Slum rehabilitation, Peace, Education, Health, Environment and Communal Harmony.

Structure of SCI India
The chief governing body of SCI India is the National Council, which meets once in a year. The National Council consists of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, elected members (2) from each branch and co-opted members (9). In between the meetings of National Council, the central Working Committee meets to decide upon the immediate issues and other business. The local groups have their own elected committee to decide upon their activities.
